           Tsunami is the series of waves in a waterbody caused by the displacement of a large volume of water generally in an ocean or a large lake ...

          Earthquake , Volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions above or below water all have the potential to generate a tsunami ... Tsunami waves do not resemble normal undersea currents or sea waves because their wavelength is for longer ....

                 2004 INDIAN OCEAN TSUNAMI

   

      2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami also called as Boxing Day Tsunami and by the scientific community the Sumatra - Andaman earthquake occured at morning 07:58:53 in local time on 26th December with an epicenter off the west coast of northern Sumatra , Indonesia ... The tsunami was caused by a rupture along the fault between the Burma Plate and Indian Plate ...

      A series of massive Tsunami waves grew up to 30 mts (100ft) high once heading inland , after being created by the underwater seismic activity offshore ... 227,898 people were died in 14 countries making its one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history ...

      In these places , Aceh has reported larger no.of.deaths ... It is the third largest ever recorded and had the longest duration of faulting ever observed between 8&10 minutes . It caused planet to vibrate as much as 10mm...

        The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami was unusually large in geographical and geological extent ... An estimated 1600 km of fault surface slipped about 15mts along the subduction zone where the Indian Plate slides under the over riding Burma Plate ...

    Energy released - 1.1*10^17 joules ...

INDIA :- 

         The tsunami arrived in the state of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu along the southeast coast of India mainland shortly after 9 am ... Atleast 2 hours later , it arrived in the state of Kerala along the S.W coast . Tamil Nadu the union territory of Pondicherry and Kerala were extensively damaged , while Andhra Pradesh sustained moderate damage ..

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry :-

         It ran up was only 1.6 mts (5ft 3in) in areas in the state of Tamil Nadu shielded by the island of Srilanka but was 4 to 5 mts in coastal districts such as Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu directly across the Sumatra. Height of Tsunami from 2-10 mts based on survivor accounts

                               Worst affected area is Nagapattinam (16 ft) followed by Cuddalore District ...
